In 2024, Killeen, Copperas Cove, and Harker Heights saw major changes in residential and commercial development. The rise in permits for new homes and business spaces highlighted key trends in how these cities are growing and adapting to increasing populations. Explore how residential and commercial growth is shaping their future.
Killeen Growth Trends
Killeen experienced a substantial increase in residential construction permits, issuing 789 permits throughout 2024. According to the city’s executive director of communications and marketing, 652 of these permits were for single-family homes, while others included 79 for duplexes, 54 for townhouses, and three for multi-family homes.
This marked a notable rise from the 495 permits issued in 2023, representing a 59% overall increase. Single-family home permits saw the most significant growth, jumping from 413 in the previous year. Duplex and townhouse permits also rose, with duplex permits more than doubling from 34 in 2023. On the commercial side, Killeen issued 35 permits, up from 21 in 2023, indicating a healthy expansion of business infrastructure.
Copperas Cove Growth Trends
In contrast, Copperas Cove observed a slight decrease in new residential permits, issuing 318 in 2024—a 7% drop from the 343 permits issued the previous year. Commercial permits in Copperas Cove also fell, with only three issued in 2024 compared to six in 2023. Despite these reductions, Copperas Cove continues to be a key player in regional development.
Harker Heights Growth Trends
Harker Heights faced a sharp decline in residential permits, issuing just 45 permits in 2024 compared to 293 in 2023. Of these, 21 were for single-family homes and 24 for duplexes, both significantly lower than the previous year’s figures of 219 and 74, respectively.
However, the city saw a notable increase in commercial development, issuing nine commercial permits in 2024—a substantial rise from only two in 2023. This shift suggests a growing interest in business opportunities within the city.
Conclusion
The 2024 permit data shows how Killeen, Copperas Cove, and Harker Heights are evolving. Killeen’s strong growth in both residential and commercial projects suggests a community poised for continued expansion and investment. Copperas Cove’s slight decline may indicate a period of stability, providing an opportunity to reassess future development strategies. Meanwhile, Harker Heights saw fewer homes being built but a significant increase in commercial projects, signaling a shift toward business and economic development.
These trends show each city taking a unique approach to growth. For residents, investors, and local leaders, staying aware of these changes will be important for fostering balanced and sustainable development.
